Fabulous fine arts flower in La Vernia

Fabulous fine arts flower in La Vernia
Donald Mock will play the town underachiever in the melodrama.

It’s here! The date so many have awaited with eager anticipation!

No, it’s not graduation, or time for the Miss La Vernia Pageant or Bluebonnet Fest all of which are coming, to be sure.

It’s the performance of “Maggie Mae’s Blue Plate Special,” a melodrama penned by La Vernia’s very own Shelley Henderson and brought to the stage by La Vernia Shoestring Stage Productions!

The performance is this Saturday evening, May 12, at 7 p.m. in the La Vernia High School Cafetorium, located on Bluebonnet Road (F.M. 775).

Treat Mom to a night of fun and laughter in the local community as a Mother’s Day gift! The first 25 mothers in the door will receive a special surprise. And attendees will have the chance to win one of several Mother’s Day gift baskets.

La Vernia Shoestring Stage Productions is the group behind the very successful “La Vernia’s Got Talent” staged in November 2010 in La Vernia, and “Wilson County’s Got Talent” in November 2011 in the Wiley Seale Auditorium in Floresville, which drew a wide range of local talent of all ages and appreciative audiences.

“Maggie Mae’s Blue Plate Special” is filled with romance and comedy. Enjoy the fun, throw popcorn and boo and hiss at the villain -- portrayed with gusto by Clay Bordner -- and cheer on the good guy -- played by Norman Housely. Patty Upright will bring Maggie Mae to life.

The cast also includes Blake Willeford, Cindy Dieckman, Joyce Emily, Mike Hanson, Pascalle Bippert, Raven McDowell, and Donald Mock.

La Vernia Shoestring Stage Productions was established “for the sole (pardon the pun) purpose of bringing enjoyment, entertainment, and the experience of The Arts to our community,” according to its website. The nonprofit is working hard to cultivate local talent and provide great entertainment all on a shoestring.

Tickets for the show are $8 presale, available from the La Vernia News office on Chihuahua Street, The Music Loft, and the La Vernia Spirit Shop. Tickets on performance night will be $10 each.

Better yet, take Mom to the play and see what can be done with enthusiasm on a shoestring!
