Sprint cars return to South Texas Speedway

CORPUS CHRISTI The high-flying, winged-warriors of the American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) make their return to South Texas Speedway for a special Sunday, May 27, Memorial Day weekend two-day show. After several years hiatus, the Gulf South Regional stars will be in action on the newly reconfigured, 1/4-mile, semi-banked track. South Texas Speedway picked up the touring series after an open date became available.

“When the date opened up, we jumped on it,” said General Manager Owen Pittman. “I was happy to get the sprint cars back in South Texas again. Fans in this area don’t get the chance to see these cars very often unless they travel to other tracks. They always provide exciting action for the spectators.”

Defending Gulf South Region Champion Ray Allen Kulhanek leads the contingency into the Memorial Day weekend action, with races the previous two nights in Beaumont and Willis. Multi-time regional champ Brandon Berryman comes into the weekend on Kulhunek’s heels, with Michael McNeil a close third. Travis Elliott and Beau Smith round out the top five in the 2012 points race.

Saturday night, May 26, will be a regular night of racing for the Limited Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, E-Mods, Limited Late Models, Sport Compacts, and Go-karts.

Not to be left out, the new Turn 5 bar features live music after the races, with the Midnight River Choir on Saturday night, and the Tejas Brothers in concert Sunday night.

The spectator gates open at 6 p.m., with racing starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday admission is $10 for adults, and children 12 and under are free. Admission on Sunday will be $15 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and free for children 5 and under.
