Learning forgiveness and trust

Have you ever noticed how young children will try to justify some action they know is wrong? You know, the “well, he hit me first” type thing. And have you noticed that to some extent we continue to do practically the same thing as adults? It is true that for every action there is a reaction. The big difference in doing this as a child is that with children the whole issue is soon forgotten. Adults are not as swift to let things go. That’s where we get a lot of the baggage that we carry around day to day and I don’t think it’s considered desirable designer luggage. We spend far too much time thinking about justification, and the load gets heavier the longer we carry it around.

Sometime ago I heard a sermon on what forgiveness is not, and the reason we have such a difficult time understanding it, therefore, such a hard time doing it. Forgiveness is not, a warm fuzzy feeling. It isn’t saying I will totally trust you again starting now because, I said I forgive you. Don’t we all know trust has to be earned? We seem to think we have to wait for that warm fuzzy feeling so we can say the words. How often do you see someone who had hurt you in some way and get a warm fuzzy feeling? We are to forgive because it is the right thing to do and in time the hurts will heal. Not always easy is it? Yet it is important that we learn to trust and become a forgiving person. More important is learning that trusting in Christ brings forgiveness.

I think mostly we take ourselves much too seriously. We weren’t created for controversy but for fellowship. And we need to remember that Christ forgave much more than we will ever have to contend with because he loves us. Forgiveness is probably the most preached sermon topic. Sometimes our baggage gets too heavy to carry. Forgiveness lightens loads and heals hurts and hearts. It also frees the spirit for fellowship with Christ as well as each other, just a happier and healthier life to live.

We invite you to fellowship with us on Sunday when we gather for worship. We have two services, 8:10 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. You won’t see a baggage rack at the door but plenty of it gets left there. For more information about scheduled activities and special events as well as opportunities for service go to www.fbc-people.com or call the church office at 830-253-1239 and someone will be happy to give you the desired information. Our VBS is next month, you don’t want to miss it. Have a great week and give God the glory!
