Need a cut? Try The Grateful Head

Another new sign has made its debut along U.S. 87 in La Vernia. The Grateful Head Barbershop is located under The Music Loft, next door to the Century 21 office.

Owner Jorge (pronounced George) Rodriguez has been a barber for 30 years and comes from a long line of barbers in his family. His mother and father, older brother, and sister are all barbers.

Jorge is from Lubbock, but recently moved back to this area. He and his wife, Helena, have two children, Joshua, 10, and Izabella, 9. The children will be attending La Vernia schools.

The décor of the barbershop is decidedly masculine. Black chair mats look like metal and the barber cabinets look like giant tool chests. Jorge plans to feature murals on his walls created by San Antonio graffiti artist Nik Supe.

Jorge says his shop will be a traditional barbershop, but with an edge. There will be five barber stations. They will do traditional haircuts, flattops, edge ups, faux hawks, and hot-towel shaves.

Jorge said they will aim to take care of anyone who walks in the door, but “It’s a man’s barbershop, just a little edgier,” he said. He will cater to clients of all ages.

The Grateful Head Barbershop will celebrate with an open house on Thursday, Aug. 16, with a ribbon-cutting by the Greater La Vernia Chamber of Commerce.

Hours of operation will be Tuesday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
