LV Grizzlies get 2012 season under way
Youth football players from La Vernia, Karnes County, Floresville, East Central, and Seguin stretch out prior to a series of scrimmages Aug. 25 at Wiseman Field in La Vernia. The La Vernia Grizzlies will officially open their 2012 season this weekend against Seguin.

LA VERNIA -- The La Vernia Grizzlies Youth Sports Association hosted its third annual Fall Scrimmage this past Saturday, Aug. 25. The Grizzlies invited four other teams from around the area, including the Karnes County Oilers, the Floresville Wildcats, the East Central Hornets, and the Seguin Steelers.

The games began at 9 a.m. and lasted until 6 in the evening, ending the day with a Senior (ages 12-13) game. Each organization brought teams in four age divisions. Texas Youth Football Association (TYFA) age divisions include Flag (4-6), Midgets (6-7), Rookies (8-9), Juniors (10-11), and Seniors.

The scrimmage was the last chance for the Grizzlies to size up the talent on their teams before officially starting the 2012 season at home this weekend, and each team learned a lot from the scrimmage. With each age level playing two games, the coaches were able to change things around, and to find what works best.

A big “Thank You” goes out to all the Grizzly parents that volunteered all day in the concession stand. It was a long, hot day, but all teams had great sportsmanship and it was an honor to have them come to our field.

This weekend, the Grizzlies are taking on the Seguin Steelers at Wiseman Field, the Grizzlies’ home stadium just outside La Vernia. The teams would like to invite the entire community to go out and cheer them on. The first game begins at 9 a.m.
