Lady Bears continue strong play in advance of district

LA VERNIA With district play now just two weeks away, the state-ranked Lady Bear volleyball team must polish any rough edges if they are going to make a serious run at the state title. Fortunately, the team appears to be heading in that direction.

The Lady Bears hosted a dual match Aug. 28 against the teams from McCollum and Canyon Lake. La Vernia didn’t waste time with either team, earning straight-sets victories, and then sending them packing.

During the match with McCollum, the Lady Bears maintained a steady lead en route to a 25-15 win in game one, and then took game two by the score of 25-20. A bit of fire was lit under the Lady Bears before game three, and the home team dominated the third game of the match, taking the victory by the final score of 25-5.

Although Canyon Lake didn’t fare much better during its first game with La Vernia, falling 25-9, the Lady Hawks fought back well during the second and third games of the match. Still, La Vernia locked up the wins at 25-21 and 25-17.

“The girls are starting to trust each other that is why I think we are doing well,” Head Coach Theresa Reyes said. “They are learning from mistakes made and help others through their mistakes. They are starting to play together.”

The Lady Bears then made a trip to San Marcos later in the week to compete in tournament play. La Vernia looked good in pool play, and swept their matches Aug. 30 with Connally, Giddings, and Schulenburg. Their excellent play earned the team a spot in the gold bracket, and the team returned Sept. 1.

Things didn’t go quite as well in bracket play, as the Lady Bears dropped their first match of the day against Keller. Valarie Moehrig and Brittani Dear led the scoring efforts with 7 and 6 kills, respectively, but it wasn’t enough for La Vernia to suffer its second loss of the year.

The Lady Bears responded to the loss with a hard-fought win over Corpus Christi Calallen, 25-23, 23-25, and 25-18. Brooke Haliscak tallied 15 kills for the Lady Bears, while Moehrig and Dear combined for another 15. The victory put them into the fifth-place match with Mansfield, and while the contest was extremely close, La Vernia came out on the short end of a 25-23, 29-27 match.

The Lady Bears played another dual with Devine and East Central earlier this week, and will travel to Buda this weekend for the Hays Tournament. District play begins Friday, Sept. 21 at home against Somerset.
