Pastor is proof God changes lives
Pastor Billy C. Moore and his wife, Ruby.

Pastor Billy C. Moore of the La Vernia Christian Teaching Center may be 81 years old, but he still has as much energy as a person half his age. It’s hard to keep up with him. He says he is looking forward to being 95 and still going strong.

Moore has written his own autobiography, From the Gutter to the Pulpit, which is his testimony and is being sold worldwide. He is the only original founder of the La Vernia Ministerial Alliance still serving that organization as well as the only remaining pastor still serving in one of the original churches founded in La Vernia.

The pastor is married to Ruby Lee Moore. They have one son, Dr. William C. Moore, who is a pastor and evangelist traveling around the world; he is pastor of a church in Brownsville.

Moore’s job assignment brought him to La Vernia 47 years ago. He and Ruby Lee founded the Hi-Way Haus Restaurant as well as four other businesses before being called into the ministry. Even though his job was to drill a foundation for the bridge over the Cibolo Creek, little did he know that in addition to the businesses, he would pastor and build a foundation for what is now the La Vernia Christian Teaching Center.

Moore and his wife were active members in a local church, but God called them into a new ministry in 1979. The ministry was birthed after God miraculously healed Moore of a malignant brain tumor through prayer. As his testimony spread, more and more people came to his home to hear the testimony. Many were healed and saved as he ministered to them.

Moore received his ordination through Alamo Revival Center. He and his wife sold all their businesses in order to dedicate their lives to serving God full time. Shortly thereafter, he rented the Hermann Sons building to hold church services on Sunday evenings. Soon, the building was too small and Moore was directed to build the first church, on the current site, which is now the school chapel, fellowship hall, and the church offices. Moore saw a great need for Christian education and soon Agape Christian Academy became a reality. Agape Christian Academy and the Family Life Center are the pastor’s passion, after the church.

Moore is encouraged every time someone comes to the Lord and he sees how they are maturing and growing in God. He is especially blessed, he said, as he sees the children get a Christian education and go on to college with a firm foundation, and entering the work force and the world, making a difference in other lives. The pastor writes a regular column for the church page in The La Vernia News in addition to his other efforts.

“I don’t guess I have a least-favorite aspect of my work; my time is the Lord’s time,” Moore said. “Every day brings its challenges, but we are overcomers, hoping to reach more souls for the kingdom of God.”

The La Vernia Christian Teaching Center is located at 10688 U.S. 87 W in La Vernia.
