Lady Bears get a night off before district play

LA VERNIA With an off night before the start of their District 28-3A volleyball schedule, the Lady Bears have a little time to work out any trouble spots. With a 24-5 record, however, it seems there aren’t many weaknesses to address in La Vernia.

When the season began, Head Coach Theresa Reyes said this was a different team than last year, but that the Lady Bears were stacked with talent, and have the potential to be great this year. So far her evaluation seems spot on, as the Lady Bears have blown by nearly every opponent they have faced, falling only to Class 4A Alamo Heights, and to four Class 5A teams during tournament play.

Last week, the Lady Bears began play with a tough match against 4A Brennan. La Vernia dropped the first two sets of the match, but then thundered back with three straight victories, taking the match win. Brittani Dear, Brooke Haliscak, and Valarie Moehrig led the attack, and the team showed Reyes the kind of fight it has inside.

Lytle was next on the schedule, and La Vernia wasted little time with the Lady Pirates. The Lady Bears dominated their opponents, winning 25-14, 25-10, and 25-15. Moehrig and Haliscak led the attack, as things ended nearly as quickly as they began.

The Lady Bears had a bye scheduled for Sept. 18, and are set to begin district play this Friday, Sept. 21, against Somerset. The Lady Bulldogs don’t have a stellar record by any means, but like the Lady Bears, played a tough non-district schedule against a host of Class 4A and 5A teams. Taking Somerset too lightly would be a mistake, and it’s certain Reyes knows this.

Reyes said she is looking forward to beginning district play, and said her team is, too.

“We have had a great pre-district, so we are ready to roll,” Reyes said. “The girls are excited and so am I. Our hard work is going to show as we begin what we worked so hard for.”

The Lady Bears’ match with Somerset is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. in La Vernia, giving fans the opportunity to watch both the varsity volleyball and football teams in action.
