LA VERNIA -- Charges are pending as troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol are investigating a two-vehicle rollover wreck that sent two to San Antonio hospitals. The crash occurred at approximately 11 p.m. Feb. 27 on Hickory Hill Drive east of here.
DPS Trooper Richard Bernhardt said that 57-year-old Christine Epright of La Vernia was driving her 1998 Mercury Mountaineer westbound on Hickory Hill Drive, allegedly at a high rate of speed. As the vehicle rounded a curve, Epright lost control, which caused the vehicle to roll over and slide into a Dodge Ram pickup truck parked in front of a residence. Upon making contact with the pickup truck, Epright’s vehicle rolled a second time, coming to rest on its roof.
Randall Hunter, 54, of La Vernia suffered head injuries when he was thrown from the Mercury. Bernhardt said Hunter was flown via AirLife helicopter to University Hospital, where his condition was unavailable as of press time March 1.
Members of the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department used the Jaws of Life to extricate Epright from her vehicle. The La Vernia Emergency Medical Services then transported her to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. A hospital spokesman said Feb. 28 Epright was listed in stable condition.
