It’s a pretty typical occurrence in the La Vernia community. Someone is in need and a friend or neighbor wants to help. So they organize a fund-raiser to help raise money and awareness for the folks who need it.
That’s exactly why Taste of Chicago Deli & Grill owners Reuben and Barbara Garcia and the Western Steak House will host a benefit for Osborne Stables Saturday, Oct. 6, starting at 8 a.m.
The Garcias know Claudette Osborne is trying to house, feed, and rehabilitate a number of equine companions. With the drought, grazing is in short supply, and feed costs have risen. All the animals require veterinary care, too, so the costs for Osborne’s efforts on behalf of these horses and other animals have increased.
Saturday’s event will include a community yard and rummage sale, swap meet, and craft show. Spaces are available for $20 each. Proceeds from the vendor spaces will benefit Osborne Stables Equine Rescue. Profits earned by vendors are theirs to keep. Youth spaces will be available at no charge; tables and chairs for young vendors will be available under the canopy.
Auto swap meet vendors also are invited; spaces are $20.
Music will be provided by “Uncle Willy” Sparks and friends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Uncle Willy plays gospel and blues on a guitar signed by famed blues guitarist B.B. King. The concession will be open and restrooms are available.
Susan Leslie of Leslie Lane Llamas and her Wilson County 4-H Llama Project group will participate, for several reasons: Claudette’s doing a good thing and it’s for a good cause, the kids in 4-H are getting service experience, and it’s a good way to share information about the llama project in the community, as well as a great way to have fun and meet people.
Area Girl Scouts plan to offer face-painting and a horseshoe tournament. Little kids can enjoy playing in the bounce castle, too.
Taste of Chicago is located at 11984 U.S. 87, just south of La Vernia, across the highway from the Western Steak House and the Twin Oaks subdivision.
