God forgives and forgets

Everyone has been offended at one time or another. Sometimes the offense is intentional and other times it is unintentional but either way the person that was offended safely hides the offense in his or her heart. It is very hard for people to forgive others because we want them to experience the same or even worse hurt than ours.

I once heard a story of a man who embarrassed his wife in front of their friends. Of course the wife didn’t talk to him on the way home. Neither did she talk to him the next day until his lightning fast mind realized that while his ego was boosted at her expense, she had been offended by his actions. He quickly bought her flowers and asked forgiveness and she accepted his apology but throughout the day, she brought up the situation several times. The husband, who had thought he was forgiven, said to his wife: “I thought you were going to forgive and forget.” She replied, “I have but I don’t want you to forget.”

I am sure we have all forgiven but not forgotten or we forgave but still punished others by bringing up the situation over and over again. Can you imagine if God would keep reminding us of our sins after we asked His forgiveness? In our hearts we want God to forgive us and erase our sins but we must do the same for others. In Colossians 3:12-13, God tells us: “ Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.”
