LA VERNIA -- After beginning district play with a loss to Pleasanton two weeks ago, the varsity Bear football team enjoyed a bye last week, and is ready to get back into competition this Friday. The Bears will travel to Poteet this Friday to face the Aggies.
La Vernia is currently sitting at 2-5 on the year and 0-1 in district play. Meanwhile, Poteet’s record stands at 4-4 on season, and 0-2 in District 28-3A play. The Aggies have district losses to Somerset and Pleasanton.
The Aggies run the ball about three times as often as they throw, with Kris Guzman, Derrick Santos, and quarterback Sean Rodriguez splitting touches fairly evenly. Guzman leads the team with 497 yards on 86 touches, and Santos is close behind with 419 yards on 68 carries.
The Aggies have thrown 105 passes this season, an average of about 13 tosses per game. Rodriguez has completed about 44 percent of his passes for 657 yards.
The Bears have struggled to score at times this year, but should be improved this week following the bye. La Vernia is throwing the ball a lot more these days, and Poteet may have trouble covering the speedy Bear receivers. Spreading the offense out across the field will give more opportunities for the La Vernia playmakers. Scoring points against Poteet is very “doable” for the Bears.
On defense, La Vernia has shown throughout the year that it can slow down opposing running games. With the Aggies being a run-heavy team, La Vernia should find success in slowing the Poteet ground game.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 26, in Poteet.
