LA VERNIA -- This past weekend, the La Vernia Grizzlies took on the JYSF Longhorns.
The Juniors took the field first. They scored early with a 38-yard run by Hunter Green. Throughout the rest of the game, Rayne Wegehaupt and John Escobar gave strong running efforts getting the ball down the field, but the Longhorns kept the Grizzlies from scoring again. Luckily, the Grizzly defense, led by Brian Friel, held the Longhorns scoreless and the Juniors took home another win for the season.
The Flag boys then took the field in the warmer noon sun. Led by Holden Green and Garrett Lamb, the little guys scored three times putting 20 points on the board. The defense struggled. Jacob Cruz did his part pulling flags, but he couldn’t get any help. The defense didn’t fare as well, as the quick Longhorns evaded tackles and scored 32 points by the end of the game. The loss ended the Grizzlies’ season with a 4-4 record.
The Midgets looked better than they have all year, but still couldn’t get the “W” in their corner. William Viator, Hunter Dallas, and John Gulley all had a good showing on both sides of the ball. The entire team has improved each game.
The Rookies took the field last with playoff hopes in mind. They ran big boy Trentyn Dudek straight up the middle getting yardage on every carry. Quarterback Braden Kaitner, Ty Halsey, Patrick Murphy, and Dawson Miller had strong offensive showings putting 46 points on the board for the Grizzlies. The defense did its part too, using Henry Dantonio, Tyler Goan, Hunter Stautzenberger, Chase Donahoo, and Ezekial Sanders to hold the Longhorns to just 8 points. They won the game and earned their playoff position. Congratulations to the Rookies and their 5-3 season.
The organization is proud of all the boys this year and would like to congratulate them on a job well done. The organization would also like to wish a huge “Good Luck” to the Grizzly Cheerleaders this weekend. The girls will compete in the TYFA statewide competition in Corpus Christi.
