Thanksgiving not just seasonal thing

It’s that time of the year when we all tend to focus more on just how much we have to be thankful for. And I think most of us know full well that we shouldn’t just be thankful at this time, but every day. Our days are so filled with busy things that take our focus off the fact that sometimes our little everyday boring routines are truly the most important things we do. And it isn’t until those routines get interrupted that we realize the comfort of knowing what comes next can bring.

We need only to watch the news of the damage Hurricane Sandy brought to realize how difficult it must be to survive that kind of loss and the amount of hard work that must be done before even thinking of starting over again. How thankful does that make us? And many people in our own little town went through much of the same with the flood of 1998. We did the same thing here in La Vernia that the people in the New York area are doing; we helped each other. There was time found in all our busyness to lend a hand in some way.

It’s good to know that we can help make a difference in lives everywhere. First Baptist Church is working on the Samaritans Purse Shoe Box project and this is the last week. I’ve found it easy to pick out the people who are buying for this project locally and have had occasion to strike up a conversation with other shoppers. It’s nice to know you have something in common with people you’ve never met. The La Vernia Food Pantry is a local worthy project. They need our support to help families who would not have a Thanksgiving dinner otherwise. Sharing is a way to let people know you care and we all need to remember we could be some sort of tragedy away from needing help ourselves. There is great opportunity to show the love of Christ by caring and sharing.

We want to invite you to come visit with us at First Baptist Church on Sunday morning. We have two worship services, one at 8:10 a.m. and one at 10:45 a.m. We call ourselves “the people place” and that’s just what we are, but we are also a church family. And we love to watch our family grow. Visit our website, www.fbc-people.com, for more information about our scheduled activities and special events. This time of year brings lots of special events for all ages and we’d love to share them with you. Have a great week and give God the glory!
