What did I ever do to deserve this?
My humble efforts to serve pale in comparison at the richness of your gifts, loving Lord!
You, who made the heavens and the earth, who separated darkness and night, who called the stars into being by name, have done the same -- and more -- for me. You called me by name into life. You love each of us so completely, as if we are your one and only. You continue to love us as we turn away, seeking our own way.
And you continue to give.
What incomprehensible mystery you are, Abba. Even as we turn away, your love for us remains -- steadfast, constant, great beyond our imagining.
And even if we reject you, you continue to rain such glorious blessings into our lives; each day, each moment, is a wondrous gift. And they hold such precious gifts themselves -- beauty, others to share our lives, air to breathe, food to eat, work for our hands and minds ... You continue to love us and gift us so richly.
We should be embarrassed and humbled. Instead, we go through our days as if this simply is our due.
What have I ever done to deserve this?
And nothing I can do, be, or say will ever be enough to express my gratitude for all that has been, is, and may yet be.
“I will extol you, my God and king; I will bless your name forever. Every day I will bless you; I will praise your name forever. Great is the Lord and worthy of high praise; God’s grandeur is beyond understanding” (Psalm 146:1-3).
