Lady Bears top Panthers, remain unbeaten
KARI RING/Contributor The Lady Bears step up on defense during their Nov. 20 win over Medina Valley. La Vernia is currently unbeaten and ranked No. 8 in the state.

LA VERNIA There was only one game on the schedule last week due to the Thanksgiving holiday, but the Lady Bears made the most of it, knocking off the Class 4A Medina Valley Panthers, 39-26.

Things started off slowly in the first period, but La Vernia stayed a basket up on Medina Valley, and carried a 7-5 lead into the second eight minutes of play.

Things quickened in the second, though the two teams were again close in scoring. The Lady Bears once again outscored the Panthers by 2 points in the period, and took an 18-14 advantage to the locker room.

While Medina Valley’s performance fell off a bit in the third, La Vernia turned up the heat. The Lady Bears turned in their best scoring effort of the evening, dropping in 13 points, all while holding the Panthers to 8 points in the period.

The lead was 31-22 heading into the final stanza, but the Lady Bears didn’t back down. Head Coach Mandie West and her team kept pressure on Medina Valley, and the Lady Bears outscored the Panthers 8-4 in the final period of play, giving La Vernia a 39-26 win the team’s seventh straight victory of the season.

With a perfect 7-0 mark to start the season, the Lady Bears are attracting attention from around the area and the state. La Vernia is currently the state’s No. 8-ranked team, and the Lady Bears are certainly playing like it.

The Lady Bears were scheduled to face Southside, another Class 4A team, this past Tuesday, though results were unavailable as of press time. The team will travel to Marion Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 29-Dec. 1, to participate in tournament play.
