Roma (left) and Eva Vescio of La Vernia will perform in the San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” Dec. 21-22 in the Lila Cockrell Theater in San Antonio. The girls recently performed in “The Snow Queen,” also in San Antonio.

Two diminutive ballerinas from La Vernia are very busy, as the holidays bring seasonal favorite ballets, “The Snow Queen” and “The Nutcracker,” to area stages.

Eva and Roma Vescio have been dancing for years and have quite a resume of experience onstage.

Eva, 7, is a second-grader at St. James Catholic School in Seguin. Roma is 6; because of her late birthday, she is in kindergarten at St. James. Eva has been dancing for five years and Roma, for four. Eva also takes piano lessons.

The girls train at the Connally’s Dance Workshop in San Antonio and just completed dancing in a production of “The Snow Queen,” in which they portrayed white bunnies. As extras, the girls were in full costumes with long bunny ears and got to dance around on the stage.

“The Snow Queen” was produced by the nonprofit San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet, San Antonio’s only pre-professional ballet company. Eva was a flower in “Hansel and Gretel” last year.

Eva and Roma have two different roles in the ballet. In one scene, they will be gray mice; in another scene, they will be toys and get to ride in Santa’s sleigh. They will be in full costume with mice headpieces and gray tights with pink feet (ballet shoes). They are currently rehearsing two times a week in San Antonio.

Their little sisters, 4-year-old identical twins, also have taken ballet classes for two years. They will start in ballet productions when they are 6. Their 2-year-old sister is determined to be a ballerina, too, just like her older sisters. Their 7-month-old baby brother, Angelo, may have to grow up to catch the girls as they gracefully leap across the room.

The future looks very bright for this musical, dancing family. They will be bright in the lights on stage.

Eva and Roma will perform in “The Nutcracker” at the Lila Cockrell Theater on Friday, Dec. 21, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. The ballet will feature two professional ballerinas from Russia, including Olga Pavlova. Paul Mejia of the Mejia Ballet International is the choreographer/artistic director; San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet’s Susan Connally is also an artistic director.
