It’s tough being Christian in America

 

It is often possible to go online to get information that might not be available through traditional news sources. The old TV networks ABC, CBS, and NBC, as well as the Associated Press, provide only selected news.

For instance, news about Christians is normally not considered worthy of prime time -- unless it casts Christians in a bad light. Earlier this year, there was all sorts of flack after Chick-fil-A’s CEO Dan Cathy openly expressed his biblical beliefs and personal opposition to gay marriage.

In protest over Chick-fil-A’s philosophy, mayors in several cities actually refused to allow any new franchises to open in their towns. In support of Cathy’s public stand, Christians by the thousands in cities across the nation lined up to eat chicken!

His comments set off a virtual firestorm of debates about the Bible vs. government edicts. Not just Christians, but those who support freedom of religion and free speech followed through by spending their money with this beleaguered franchise.

The Chick-fil-A eruption is just one example in a culture war that continues between an amoral society and a religious society. David Green, founder and CEO of Hobby Lobby stores, finds himself in the midst of that war, and has reluctantly joined in the fight.

Green was forced to become vocal in his fight to continue his business in a manner compatible with his religious beliefs. In a letter he wrote in November, he explained how his company began working out of a garage using a $600 bank loan 40 years ago. Today, Hobby Lobby, with more than 500 locations in 41 states is a real American success story.

“Our children grew up into fine business leaders, and today we run Hobby Lobby together, as a family,” he wrote. Like Chick-fil-A, they have honored their commitment never to be open for business on Sundays.

They have been successful and pay their employees well. Their success continues, despite a down economy. Now, however, the government “threatens to change all that,” wrote Green. The health-care mandate requires that even family-run businesses such as Hobby Lobby must provide certain abortion-inducing drugs as part of their health-care policy.

If they fail to comply, writes Green, “ ... we could face $1.3 million per day in government fines. Our government threatens to fine job creators in a bad economy.”

Backed into a corner like other Christian businesses, Hobby Lobby was forced to make a choice. Wanting to stay in business and to do what they believe to be right, they have filed a lawsuit asking a federal court to stop this health-care mandate before it hurts their business and others like it.

News like this about what is happening to Christians all over this country should be top and center, front-page news, but it gets barely a mention. As Christians are acutely aware, it is a culture war that continues below the mainstream radar.
