Rabel to shoot for Jacksonville State University

LA VERNIA -- Congratulations to Garrett Rabel, a senior at La Vernia High School. Rabel recently signed to attend school and participate as a member of the shooting team at Jacksonville State University, located in Jacksonville, Ala.

Rabel will attend Jacksonville beginning in the 2013-14 academic school year, where he will be a part of the men’s shooting team. Rabel is an extremely accomplished rifleman with many awards and honors to his credit and is moving forward with his shooting career. He was the Texas State 4-H Champion in 2010, and won the NRA State Championship and Outdoor 3P Small-bore title in 2011. Rabel has won numerous other awards in competition through the NRA, USA Shooting, Texas State Rifle Association, Civilian Marksmanship Program, and 4-H. He competed in both small-bore rifle (10 yards) and air rifle (6 yards).

Rabel has also qualified for the Junior Olympics four years running, winning the 2011 J2 Junior Olympic Gold Medal in 3X40 feet. In addition to many local and state level contests, he also qualified for the Texas State Rifle Association Junior Small-bore Team three years running and competed at Camp Perry, Ohio, in the NRA Outdoor Nationals. While in attendance at Nationals, Rabel set a new Junior National Team Record for Outdoor Conventional 3P with a score of 2347-117X. He also won the National Standing Champion Metallic Sights competition. One of his proudest moments to date was when he competed at the Olympic Trials for the 2012 London Olympics at Ft. Banning, Ga. in June of 2012.

The staff and administrators of La Vernia High School, as well as the district administrators, are all very proud of Rabel and his accomplishments. It was articulated perfectly by LVISD’s superintendent, Dr. Tom Harvey, when he said, “I have known Garrett and his family for many years. He comes from a caring and supportive environment that has assisted in his development. He is an excellent student who demonstrates academic prowess and extremely honorable decorum. It is easy for me to say that when one considers grades, character, participation in extracurricular activities, and service to his community, Garrett is in the top 1 percent of students with whom I have come in contact during my 36 year career as an educator.”
