Every year as we celebrate Christmas, we have fun and enjoy the festivities but is there a spiritual change in our lives after the holidays? To be truthful, people are usually spiritually drained after the holidays because they turn their focus from Jesus to other things. Christmas is just an event, but it is an event that should bring change not only to the world but each individual life. It should impact and transform our spiritual, emotional, and personal life. If we could only grasp the real meaning of God’s gift to mankind, it would transform our lives completely.
I once heard a story of a farmer who was having his coffee by the window in his kitchen. He heard something hitting the window and found a small bird repeatedly trying to fly through the glass. It had been snowing and the indoors looked much warmer and comfortable for the bird. The farmer had an idea. Why not open the barn? Perhaps the bird could find a warm spot in the eaves of the tall building filled with hay. He opened the barn and turned on the light but the bird kept pecking at the window. “How can I get the bird’s attention?” the farmer said. “I know! I will make a trail of seed on the white snow leading to the barn. Surely the bird is hungry and if he follows the path of seeds, he will find its way into the barn.” The bird noticed the seeds and ate a few but was afraid to enter the barn so it returned to the window determined to peck a hole in the glass to get inside. The farmer even tried to distract the bird toward the barn but nothing worked. The farmer had done everything he could to save the bird and he thought, If only I were a bird, then I could tell the bird that it is safe and warm and that there is plenty of food in the barn. I could save its life.
Of course, the farmer could do nothing to convince the bird, but God did something to save humanity. He became a human being like us, grew up and died on the cross, and rose from the dead to pay for our sins. God loved us so much and He did not want us to perish so He gave us His Son Jesus to lead us to salvation. He has shown us the way but many of us are afraid to enter in. If we would only follow Jesus, our life can be transformed through His salvation and we can enjoy real love, peace, and joy.
