Drivers on U.S. 87 between La Vernia and Sutherland Springs should be prepared for delays in their journeys. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began lane closures Dec. 19, as roadwork takes place.
The stretch of road affected runs from 1.1 miles south of La Vernia at Post Oak Road to just less than a mile north of Sutherland Springs.
Shoulders have been closed off in recent weeks as crews worked on the drain culverts, said Josh Donat, TxDOT public information officer. Crews now are working on the pavement base level along the limits of construction.
“This will require crews to reduce the roadway to one lane, requiring one-way traffic control,” Donat said. “Folks will see flaggers out there directing traffic -- please be mindful of them. The work should be finished by the end of the week.”
When this work is complete, the rest of the work will be limited to the shoulders.
The work on drain culverts will continue through the new year, Donat added.
This is the start of planned construction on U.S. 87 in Wilson County, from F.M. 775 to F.M. 539. The roadway is being widened to add passing lanes, with northbound and southbound lanes each approaching C.R. 342. Work is scheduled to be complete by fall 2013.
According to information from TxDOT, U.S. 87 carries nearly 10,000 vehicles per day, based on 2011 estimates from the Texas Transportation Institute.
