FISCHER -- The Bears had just one basketball game on the schedule last week, but La Vernia made the most of it, picking up a 49-41 win over Canyon Lake.
The teams opened up the first period of play with a decent scoring pace, as each team found ways to score on their end of the floor. La Vernia managed to hold a slight scoring advantage through the first eight minutes of play, though, and led 13-12 heading into the second.
The close play of the first period was lost in the second, as the Bears doubled up on the Hawks, outscoring the host team 12-6 through the second stanza, and took a 25-18 lead into halftime.
While Canyon Lake managed to hold La Vernia to just 8 points in the third period of play, the Bears kept the Hawks at just 7 points. La Vernia increased its lead to 8, and moved into the final period of play with a decent advantage.
The Hawks made their best attempt at a comeback during the fourth period of play, but the aggressive nature of their offensive play may have led to a letdown on the defensive side. While Canyon Lake had its best scoring quarter of the game en route to 16 points, La Vernia matched the effort with 16 points of its own. When the final buzzer sounded, it was La Vernia with the win, 49-41.
Junior Colby Sims led the Bear scoring effort with 17 points, followed by Austin Pickens with 13 and Dillon Pickens with 11.
The win evened the Bears’ season record at 6-6, and sent them into the Christmas break on a high note. The Bears are scheduled to play Schulenburg Dec. 27 in La Vernia.
