LA VERNIA -- It’s been an up-and-down season for the La Vernia Bear basketball team, but the team looks to be off to a good start in district play, having secured a 47-26 win over Pleasanton.
The Bears started last week with a non-district game in Devine. The Bears came out swinging in the first period of play and outscored the Warhorses 19-10. The two teams played an even second period, and as they headed for the locker rooms, it was La Vernia with a 35-28 lead.
Things went downhill in a hurry during the third period, though, as Devine held La Vernia to just 5 points, while scoring 14 of its own to take a 42-40 lead into the final stanza.
Things were close in the closing minutes of the game, but the Warhorses once again outscored the Bears for the period to lock up a 51-46 win over La Vernia. Colby Sims led the Bears during the effort with 16 points, and Austin Pickens added another 12.
The Bears began District 28-3A play last Friday at home, as the Pleasanton Eagles rolled into town. While game details and stats were unavailable as of press time, we can report that the Bears secured the win by the final score of 47-26. The 1-0 start is exactly what the Bears needed, and the team will look to continue its winning ways this week.
The Bears were scheduled to host Hawkins Jan. 15, and will travel to Poteet this Friday, Jan. 18, to take on the Poteet Aggies. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
