When God created man, He created him in His image and the clump of clay became a human being when God breathed His spirit into it. God intended that same spirit in man to guide him and to be a “candle” or light exposing sin in the heart. The Bible tells us that “The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord ...” (Proverbs 20:27). What does a candle do when lit in a dark place? It lights up the dark room and exposes everything in it.
When the devil tempted Eve, he reasoned with her. Many times, we think that reasoning is only done by the brain, but the brain is only a part of the process. Our reasoning checks with our spirit to see if everything is well or warns us if something is not right. I am sure Eve had that warning in her spirit, because she went back and forth with the devil as the devil tried to convince her that it was OK to disobey God’s command. She could have listened to her spirit and stood her ground. She could have told the snake to leave, but instead she decided to ignore that still, small voice which is the spirit of God. Eve then tempted Adam, and I am sure God’s spirit warned him also, but the temptation was stronger. The spirit or “candle” of God immediately exposed their sin and they hid to avoid confronting God.
Today, we face many situations. God’s spirit is there to help us make the right choices and to live for Him, but we reason in our head instead of listening to our spirit. We hide what we’ve done in our heart, thinking that no one will ever find out but the spirit of God is always searching our hearts, exposing everything.
Adam and Eve were kicked out of the Garden of Eden, but God is giving us another chance. Romans 6:23 tells us: “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus.” God has provided a way to get rid of the junk in our lives. When we open the door of our heart to Jesus and ask His forgiveness for the things His spirit has exposed, He will forgive us and wash our sins away.
