Hope Church plans anniversary celebration

Hope Church plans anniversary celebration

Hope Church in La Vernia will celebrate its 10th birthday this Sunday, Jan. 27, with a tailgate party!

The celebration will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at Hope Assembly of God Church, located at 313 W. Chihuahua.

Communications Pastor Belinda Haddock said it’s been an honor for the church to be part of the community for 10 years and the congregation is very excited about the anniversary.

“We’ll begin with a celebration rally inside the church and then take the festivities out to the front parking lot,” Haddock said. “There, we will enjoy spending time together, eating a variety of delicious foods, and participating in some fun activities all sponsored by our upcoming Life Groups. And where there’s a birthday, there’s also cake!”

The event is free and everyone is invited. Members of the church’s spring semester Life Groups will host booths in the parking lot; everyone is welcome to visit for more information and involvement.

Some of the participants will be the La Vernia Food Pantry volunteers; Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University; Bible Studies for men, women, youth, and La Vernia teachers; several book studies and Bible college courses; Care and Midweek groups; Men of Hope; Singles in Hope; and those interested in golf, as well as Hope ministry groups, such as children and youth ministries, worship and tech teams, and host team.

“We’re excited to serve God and our La Vernia community going into 2013 and look forward to kicking that off with our 10th Birthday Tailgate Party,” Haddock said. “See you there!”

Planting the seed

According to a history of the church on its website, www.myhope.tv, after the loss of their second child by miscarriage, God placed in the hearts of pastors Bobby and Lisa Nixon the desire to give birth to a baby church. It was from here that Pastor Bobby and his family founded Hope Assembly of God Church in La Vernia, and God strategically brought together a team committed to developing and growing a church.

In August 2002, Hope Church began in a home with 17 people in attendance. On Jan. 5, 2003, Hope held its first public worship service in the La Vernia Primary School cafeteria, and celebrated with an official dedication of the church on March 30, 2003. After that, Hope purchased acreage at the corner of U.S. 87 and F.M. 1346, while continuing to meet in the primary school, growing steadily from year to year.

Growing up

In December 2008, Hope purchased additional property and buildings, formerly owned by Parker Lumber, at the corner of W. Chihuahua and Nicholson in downtown La Vernia. With a team of extraordinary volunteers and contractors, the congregation renovated the facilities in record time to become Hope’s new home, opening the doors in January 2009. An adjacent home also was purchased and renovated to serve as Hope’s new offices on Nicholson Street.

Reaching out

Hope Church continued to grow. In October 2009. Hope sold its original acreage on U.S. 87 to community newcomer H-E-B. This not only allowed the church to celebrate becoming debt-free, but also to contribute generous donations to the local, national, and world missionaries supported by Hope.

Throughout 2012, considerable renovations were made to the La Vernia facilities, including extending the sanctuary, adding a cry room, and more.

The congregation continues to await The Blessed Hope Jesus’ return. And as they wait, the church maintains its focus on The Great Commandment to love God and love others, and The Great Commission going into the world to proclaim the Good News that Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior.

The vision of Hope is to “reach and equip people for successful Christian living.”
