What do you do when no one around you understands what you are going through and you need someone to encourage or strengthen you? Many times we have been encouragement for someone who needed our help but when the tables turn and it is us who needs help, we stand all alone. Sometimes there is no one by our side to help us when we are going through difficult situations. It is in times like these that we need to build ourselves up.
King David was in such a situation once when his nation was threatened. His whole family had been kidnapped and his own men had turned against him. 1 Samuel 30:6 tells us: “Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved...But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.” When we don’t have anyone to hold our hand, we must learn to strengthen ourselves in God.
How do you encourage yourself when you are weak? Our first instinct is to run to another set of ears but instead we should run to God with all our cares and give them to Him. Psalm 61 says: “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer. From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” Prayer is like talking to your best friend but God is better than a best friend. He is there 24/7.
We can build ourselves up through the Word of God. Read the Bible where God leads you and soon you will find strength and encouragement to overcome any situation. After we have cast our cares and received direction from God’s Word, then it is time to put into action what we have learned. Soon you will be singing that favorite song: “Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name!” We are conquerors in Jesus.
