Bears win Floresville tourney
The Bear baseball team commemorates its championship following the Floresville Tournament Feb. 28-March 2. The Bears won all five games by an average of more than 7 runs.

FLORESVILLE -- It was a good weekend for the Bear baseball team in Floresville last weekend, as the Blue and White ripped off five straight wins en route to the tournament championship.

The Bears got things going in Floresville with a 13-1 win over Lytle. Troy Lyssy was on the hill for the Bears, and he threw three strikeouts while giving up five hits. He threw all five innings to pick up the win. Meanwhile, the Bears scored 4 runs in the first, 2 in the second, 5 in the third, and tacked on another 2 in the bottom of the fourth. The Bears tallied 11 hits in the game.

Next up for La Vernia was Edison, and the Bears had to work hard for the 4-2 victory. Edison took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, and then made it 2-0 in the top of the fourth. The Bears scratched 1 run in the bottom of the sixth, then drove in 3 in the seventh to seal the victory. Anthony Sherrard picked up the win on the mound, and Colby Skelton got the save.

After the late comeback win against Edison, the Bears were looking to make things easier on themselves in the third round, as they took the field against the Southside Cardinals. La Vernia jumped out in a hurry against Southside, scoring 4 runs in the first inning and 4 more in the second. With 2 insurance runs in the third and another in the fifth, the Bears easily cruised to an 11-1 win. Colby Sims earned the win on the hill.

La Vernia took on Holmes in the semifinal, but there was little to slow the Bears down at that point, as La Vernia rolled to a 15-4 win in 4-1/2 innings. Rudy Mendoza picked up the win on the mound, and Lyssy came on in relief. Meanwhile, the Bears took care of business in the field and at the plate, racking up 12 hits and taking advantage of four errors by Holmes.

In the championship game, the Bears had a rematch with Edison. Just like before, Edison jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second, but the Bears clawed back with 1 run in the third and 4 in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. La Vernia added a pair of runs in the fifth and 2 more in the sixth inning to make it a 9-2 game. Edison threatened a comeback in the seventh inning, but Lyssy and the Bear defense shut the game down after allowing just 2 runs, and locked up the championship with a 9-4 victory. Mendoza led the Bears with three hits, and Justin Trevino had 3 RBIs.

In addition to the championship trophy, Colton Parrish, Trevino, and Dylan Tuten were all named to the all-tournament team.

The Bears were scheduled to play in Cuero March 5, and will be at the Somerset tournament later this week. La Vernia is set to begin district play Tuesday, March 19, against Hawkins.
