Bears split games during spring break

Bears split games during spring break
La Vernia sophomore Dylan Tuten takes a cut at a pitch during the Bears’ March 15 loss to Marion.

LA VERNIA With their tournament season behind them, the La Vernia Bears played a pair of baseball games at home last week, and ended up splitting games with Lytle and Marion.

The Bears played host to Lytle on March 13, and had little trouble with the Pirates, eventually closing out an 8-0 win. While the teams were scoreless after the first inning of play, La Vernia scored 2 runs in the bottom of the second inning and another in the third, giving the Bears a 3-0 advantage heading into the fourth inning of play. In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Bears blew the game open with 5 runs, creating an 8-0 lead that gave Lytle little hope of a comeback. The Bears held off the Pirates in the final two innings and secured their 13th win of the season.

Anthony Sherrard struck out three batters in securing the win, while Troy Lyssy and Austin Preiss combined for another five strikeouts. Justin Trevino led the Bears at the plate with three hits and two runs, while Colby Sims, Colton Parrish, and Dylan Tuten each had a pair of hits to help the cause.

Last Friday, the Bears welcomed the Marion Bulldogs into town, but the visitors weren’t as gracious. Marion scored 1 run in the first and another in the second, and then added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it a 4-0 game. The Bears finally scored in the bottom of the seventh, but the 1 run that came across home plate wasn’t enough to keep La Vernia from the loss.

Skelton fanned four batters and walked two en route to the loss, while Rudy Mendoza came on in relief, picking up one strikeout, one walk, and allowing 1 earned run. Drake Bruner and Skelton each had two hits for the Bears, and Christian Bruce drove in Skelton for the Bears’ lone run.

The loss was only the Bears’ second of the year, and the team is looking good at 13-2. La Vernia was scheduled to host Hawkins March 19 to begin District 28-3A play, and the Bears will travel to Poteet this Friday, March 22, to square off with the Aggies. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.
