LA VERNIA -- With two more wins last week, the Lady Bear softball team remains perfect in District 28-3A play.

La Vernia began last week with a game at home against Hawkins. It wasn’t much of a game, though, and it only lasted two and a half innings as the Lady Bears ran away with a 16-0 win.

After holding Hawkins scoreless in the top of the first inning, La Vernia exploded for 9 runs in the bottom of the frame. Hawkins didn’t get anything going in the second inning either, but the Lady Bears tacked on another 7 runs to make it a 16-0 game after just two complete innings. The mercy rule kicked in in the third, and Hawkins had one final chance to keep the game alive. The Lady Bears kept the San Antonio team from scoring, though, and the game was called early.

Rene Cummings picked up the win for La Vernia in the circle, throwing all three innings. She struck out nearly every batter she faced, finishing with 8 Ks en route to the no-hitter.

At the plate, nearly everyone in a Lady Bear uniform got a hit, and Johnna Sturm and Cummings led the way with two hits apiece. Savannah Martinez led the team in RBIs with three. Kenzie Conner, Savannah Martinez, and Morgan Mikes all hit doubles during the game, and Sage Martinez drew two walks.

The next game on the schedule was Poteet, and the Lady Bears once again picked up a big win, this time on the road by the final score of 18-2.

As the visiting team, the Lady Bears had the first at-bat in Poteet, and La Vernia put 4 runs on the board. Mikes was pitching well, and the Lady Bear defense backed her up, as La Vernia retired the side with no Poteet runs. In the top of the second inning, La Vernia tacked on 4 runs to their total, and led 8-0 midway through the second inning.

The Lady Bears added a 9th run in the third, but Poteet got it back by earning its first run of the game in the bottom of the third. La Vernia responded with a 3-run effort in the top of the fourth, and Poteet added a second run in the bottom of the frame.

With the score at 12-2 going into the top of the fifth, the Lady Bears looked to put the game away. La Vernia scored a total of 6 runs, and led 18-2. Poteet had to match La Vernia’s scoring output to keep the game going, but Mackinley Zimmerle closed things out on the hill, helping the Lady Bears to the win.

Sturm led the offensive effort with five hits on the night, including a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Rebecka Rios had four hits and four RBIs, and Alisen Saenz had three hits and drove in 1 run. Mikes picked up the win with three strikeouts and two walks, and Zimmerle fanned two batters during her two innings in the circle.

The wins lift the Lady Bears to 3-0 in district play. La Vernia was scheduled to face Sam Houston on March 25, and will be at Somerset Thursday, March 28.
