The La Vernia community said farewell Wednesday to longtime La Vernia City Councilman R.W. “Bobby” Richter, who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly March 23.

He grew up in La Vernia, where he settled and raised his family. A businessman, Bobby was involved in the community in many ways, from supporting the La Vernia Junior Livestock Show and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition, to his service since 2001 on the La Vernia City Council.

A graduate of the Ryder Technical School, Bobby had a knack for repairing almost anything, something for which many friends, family, and community members are thankful.

“La Vernia lost a great public servant on Saturday,” said Mayor Robert Gregory. “Since 2001, Bobby has been involved with the La Vernia City Council, and we benefited from his knowledge, resourcefulness, and his compassion for the city he truly loved.

“God blessed Bobby with a lot of talents, and there wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix!” Gregory added. “And if there was an obscure part needed, he knew where to find it. He always would share his talents with the city staff to help save taxpayer dollars where he could.

“We are going to miss Bobby tremendously!” he concluded.

Former Mayor Harold Schott echoed these sentiments.

“Bobby and I spent a lot of time together and I got to know him well,” Schott said. “He was a guy who would always lend a hand if someone needed assistance.

“He could fix all things mechanical,” he continued. “He was conservative and always had the best interests of the citizens of La Vernia in his heart and in his city council decisions.”

“I knew Bobby when I was running for office,” said Wilson County Pct. 3 Commissioner Ricky Morales. “I enjoyed talking to him. He was a great person. He will be missed by me and many others.”

Services were held Wednesday. See the full obituary on page 3A.
