Tennis team wins 11th straight title

LA VERNIA For the 11th consecutive year, the La Vernia High School varsity and junior varsity tennis teams have won their district titles.

The varsity girls took a commanding 65 out of 95 possible points. Preslie Pavlich is the girls singles district champion, and Kelly Poore is the runner-up. The girls doubles team of Haleigh Johnson and Paula Watson are also district champions. Destiny Roath and Nick Guitron won district in varsity mixed doubles.

These athletes will compete at the regional tournament Wednesday and Thursday, April 17-18, at the H-E-B Tennis Center in Corpus Christi, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The junior varsity girls also dominated the draws. Blanca Alvarado took first in girls singles, while Logan Parker took second. The girls doubles team of Clarissa Tedrowe and Jessica Miller defeated the other La Vernia girls doubles team of Havannah Unruh and Amanda Kirk to give the Lady Bears first and second place.

“We have had a great season so far, placing in almost every tournament we competed in,” Head Coach Angie Hargreaves said. “These athletes have put in long hours of practice and have dedicated themselves to the sport. I am so proud of what they have accomplished so far this season.”
