Lady Bears fall in Pleasanton
Pitcher Morgan Mikes winds up during a recent game between the Lady Bears and Pleasanton.

PLEASANTON With only one game on the schedule last week, it was a fairly light schedule for the Lady Bears. The team’s only contest was against Pleasanton, and the Lady Eagles bettered the Lady Bears last Thursday by the final score of 1-0.

Morgan Mikes was in the circle for La Vernia, and helped keep Pleasanton scoreless for three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, however, the Lady Eagles scratched a single run. The Lady Eagles got things going with a one-out double to right field. A sharply hit single to right field then scored the runner from second. The Lady Bears caught a runner trying to steal, and then Mikes struck out a batter for the third out, ending the Lady Eagles rally. Mikes earned a total of four strikeouts through four innings of work, giving up just four hits and 1 run. Rene Cummings had two strikeouts in relief.

The Lady Bears were held scoreless, and hits were kept to a minimum. Sage Martinez led the La Vernia effort with a double in the first inning, and a pair of walks. Savannah Martinez, Cummings, Alisen Saenz and Kara Myrick also managed hits in the game. Myrick and Saenz both nabbed bases as well, but couldn’t get across home plate.

The loss puts the Lady Bears in a tie for first place with Pleasanton. Each team has four regular season games remaining, and it will be a battle down the stretch for each team.
