Sunday afternoon shoppers at the H-E-B in La Vernia witnessed an unusual scene April 14, as a vehicle in the store’s parking lot caught fire and subsequently damaged two other vehicles.
At approximately 2 p.m., a 2007 Ford Edge belonging to Elizabeth Johnson of Adkins burst into flames.
Eyewitness Becky Thompson said H-E-B employees attempted to contain the blaze with a fire extinguisher, to no avail.
According to La Vernia Police Department Sgt. Danny Pitts after the event, the fire damaged two nearby vehicles -- a 2008 Chevrolet Impala owned by Rose Brietzke of Adkins and a 1999 Pontiac belonging to Shawn Perry of La Vernia.
Members of the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department attended and extinguished the fire, Pitts said. There were no injuries and no signs of foul play, he added.
Damage to the Edge and the Impala disabled the vehicles, which were towed from the scene. The Pontiac was not extensively damaged and was driven from the fire scene, Pitts said.
Poth Police Chief Lowell Hull was at the scene and assisted, according to the La Vernia Police Department report.
