KINGSVILLE -- La Vernia’s girls and boys track athletes fared well at the Region IV 3A championships at Texas A&M-Kingsville this past weekend. Eleven girls competed in 11 events, and 11 boys competed in seven events.
Highlights included the girls 4x100-meter relay, as Ashland Newberg, Ashley Nanton, Mackenzie Ford, and Catherine Reed reached the finals. Others reaching the finals were Olivia Hinojosa, Bailee Vrana, Catherine Reed, Dillon Goan, Roberto Guzman, and the boys 4x200-meter relay team of Levi Andrews, Brandon Ochoa, Alec Dews, and Eric Schweers, who placed and scored for their teams. Reed reached the medal podium for her performance in the 100-meter hurdles. Also noteworthy were Vrana and Goan’s personal best times in the 3,200-meter run.
Hinojosa will be making a repeat appearance at the UIL State Track & Field Championships at the University of Texas at Austin. In an exciting finish, the defending state 3,200-meter champion, Diana Moreno of Brookshire Royal, held off the young Lady Bear runner by six one-hundredths of a second (.06).
“I’m as proud as any coach, and as happy as any parent would be,” said Head Coach and father Richard Hinojosa. “Had she finished last I couldn’t be any more pleased with her effort.
“We have always been blessed with great kids and this year is no different,” Hinojosa added. “They all gave it their best. Coach Gonzalez and I are also grateful for the wonderful leadership from our regional qualifying seniors: Alec Dews, Roberto Guzman, Xanthe Harston, Valerie Petry, Catherine Reed, and Erik Schweers. We wish them all the best as they move on to greater things.”
The state championship 3A 3,200-meter girls race will be held Saturday, May 11, at 8 a.m. in Myers Stadium.
