Bears beat Texans in bi-district battle
Members of the Bear baseball team seem quite relaxed during a past district game with Somerset. The Bears finished second in the district and defeated Wimberley for the bi-district championship. The team will face La Grange this weekend for the area title.

NEW BRAUNFELS -- Both teams had trouble scoring throughout the majority of the game, but La Vernia put together an incredible 6-run fourth-inning effort last week against Wimberley, and will now advance to the second round of playoffs.

With a few hits and walks sprinkled here and there, the Bears and Texans remained scoreless for 3-1/2 innings. That all changed in the bottom of the fourth, though, as La Vernia put together a great 6-run inning.

Rudy Mendoza got things going with an infield single, and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Justus Parker then drove a 2-1 pitch into centerfield to score Mendoza, and he showed off his wheels in the process as he motored around third. Colton Parrish came to the plate and made contact. He reached on an error, and Parker came in for the Bears’ second run of the game. Colby Skelton kept things going with a single that moved Parrish to third. Skelton stole second base, and Anthony Sherrard laid down a bunt to load the bags.

Christian Bruce ripped a double to right field, as Parrish and Skelton each scored. Justin Trevino drew a walk to load the bags again, and Colby Sims hit a line drive single to center to score Sherrard and Bruce for a 6-0 lead. Wimberley made a couple of outs to escape the inning, but the damage was done, and the lead was significant.

The Texans managed a runner here and there throughout the remainder of the game, but never presented a clear threat. Troy Lyssy struck out the final three batters of the game in the top of the seventh, and La Vernia celebrated the bi-district victory.

Bruce led the Bears at the plate with three hits, including a double, and 2 RBIs. Sims and Skelton each had two hits, and Parker had a triple. Bruce, Mendoza, Parrish, and Skelton each had stolen bases. Lyssy threw the entire game for the win, racking up 10 strikeouts while giving up just five hits.

La Vernia will now advance to the area championship where it will face La Grange in a best-of-three series beginning Friday, May 10, at 7 p.m. The series will be concluded Saturday, May 11, with the first game at 3 p.m. All games will be played at Nelson Field in Austin.
