Fire destroys family home
ASHTON HUTH/COURTESY Firefighters from Stockdale and La Vernia are among those who battle a May 8 fire that gutted a mobile home in the Oak Hills Estates subdivision off U.S. 87 near La Vernia.

LA VERNIA -- A family of five is being forced to start over, following an afternoon fire May 8 that destroyed their mobile home on U.S. 87 south of here. The blaze was reported at approximately 4:20 p.m.

Chief Jason Scheel of the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department said the home’s smoke detectors were functioning properly and that they alerted Robert and Penny Fonseca and their 12-year-old daughter, Brianna, that their home was on fire. The three, along with the family’s two Chihuahua dogs, were not injured. Two other children were not home at the time.

“I just thank God that we’re all OK and safe,” said Robert, who also asked for prayers for his family.

The San Antonio Chapter of the American Red Cross helped the family to find temporary accommodations in a San Antonio motel. Penny said the family is being allowed to move into another nearby mobile home owned by the same landlord.

Volunteer firefighters from La Vernia, Sutherland Springs, Stockdale, and New Berlin, along with officers from the La Vernia Police Department, deputies from the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, and a team from the La Vernia Emergency Medical Services, responded to the scene to find the home already fully engulfed. The firefighters remained at the scene for at least four hours, Scheel said.

The Fonsecas lost all of their belongings as a result of the fire, and still are in need of items such as clothing and furniture. Items can be dropped off at St. Ann’s Catholic Church in La Vernia. Clothing sizes are listed in the box (above, below, left, right).
