We are works in progress

I remember seeing a number of artworks through the years, displayed in various places, simply called “Unfinished.”

Some are sketches for paintings or projects by the Masters, others works begun and either left unfinished while the artist sought inspiration, because he or she became involved in another project, or the artist passed away before completion.

We are the handiwork of the supreme artist, our loving Lord. Each of us is a new creation unique, not another like us ever before or since. Each is an intricate, complex, multifaceted artwork there are dimensions and layers that only become apparent in certain light or circumstances.

And God, the master Artist, the master Potter, continues his work in each of us. We don’t know what we are becoming. But each work in progress is a masterpiece in his hands, as he molds and fashions, shaves and carves, whittles and works his wonders in each one of us.

We should look on each other in wonder, marveling at the amazing detail of God’s work. We are surrounded by the incredible diversity and beauty in each other, the subtle differences that make each unique, and should celebrate these as signs of our Creator’s deep love, that he would give us such ways to witness his own incredible, incomprehensible diversity and creativity.

Although unique, we share some things in common. We belong to God. We have been created to love, praise, and worship him.

And we can be called “Unfinished.”

But God continues his work.

As St. Paul assures us, our Creator won’t leave us in this incomplete state.

“I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus” (Phil. 1:6).

Praying you will open our eyes, Abba, to the beauty and wonder you continue to bring forth in each of us, your unfinished works of art. May we see what you see. Amen.

Join other “unfinished masterpieces” to worship the Master at St. Ann Catholic Church. Masses are 5:30 p.m. Saturdays, and Sundays at 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., noon (Spanish), and 5:30 p.m. Visit www.stannslv.org for more information.
