Hall of Fame inducts Don Denson
Don Denson of St. Hedwig (third from left), is one of six athletes inducted into the Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame April 6.

Don Denson, a 1958

graduate of East Central High School, started his track and field career that same year, when he ran a 9.9-second 100-yard dash in the UIL Texas State meet.

The following year, as a student athlete at Trinity University, Denson ran a 9.7-second 100-yard dash. Now, 54 years later, Don has been inducted into the Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame. The ceremony was held April 6 in San Antonio.

The St. Hedwig resident started running in the Senior Games in 1996 at the Lubbock Senior Games meet. Since 1996, he has won more than 200 medals in local, state, and national competitions. In his age group over the years, he has ranked as one of the top sprinters and jumpers nationally in Senior and Masters competition. In 2011, he ranked No. 2 nationally in the 100-meter dash, and No. 5 in the 200-meter dash. In 2006, he ranked as the No. 1 long jumper.

Over the years, Don has developed many very good relationships and enjoys the camaraderie with other senior athletes each season. He has been instrumental in getting a number of people to start participating in Seniors and Masters track and field.

Don leads by example with diet and a healthy lifestyle constituting a major part of his training program. He actively encourages others to do the same. Don credits his wife, Marion, for keeping his nutrition on track. He also gives thanks to God.

“Since everything we have and are is a gift from God, I give Him all the glory for what I am able to do,” he said.
