Kelsey Gregory participates in the WIlson County Relay For Life April 30 in La Vernia.

LA VERNIA Wilson County’s seventh annual Relay for Life event raised more than just money, it lifted the spirits of all involved.

Kelsey Gregory, a fourth grader at La Vernia Intermediate School, turned her savings into a cash donation to the American Cancer Society. She had saved money earned from chores, aluminum cans, and monetary gifts received for her birthday and Christmas in order to purchase a computer.

She had a goal and nothing could stop her from reaching it until about a week before the Relay for Life event was scheduled to begin. Kelsey’s mother was preparing for the race along with her team, Faithful Feet. T-shirts, canopies, and several fund-raising events later, Kelsey set a goal even more impressive than her personal promise to walk 10 miles.

She wanted to give more than just her time to the Relay. Kelsey also wanted to honor the memory of her grandfather and great-grandmother, who died from cancer. She turned her savings into a gift in hopes of finding a cure.

Her final contribution was $150 and she gave it cheerfully! When asked why anyone should participate in Relay for Life, she shyly commented, “It is fun and you can make a difference.”
