Our ultimate fear

In I Corinthians 15:55-58, the Bible discusses how sin and death are connected. It tells how we are all connected to this “kind of terminal illness.” But because of God’s Gift of His Son, we who believe in the Lord are forgiven and will live forever.

There are many deaths in our world every day. I am told that number is around 150,000 plus. In spite of God’s promise to live eternally, it can cause us significant stress. So one might wonder: “Am I doing what I should and can for others?” “Am I remembered as a helper or someone who hindered?”

The Nobel Peace Prize is a prestigious award given to someone who made a difference in society. Alfred Nobel started the Nobel Peace Prize in 1888. He was actually better known for inventing dynamite. But as he read an obituary that was mistakenly printed for him, instead of his brother who had passed away, he realized that he was more equated with death than life.

He was shocked that his life revolved more about things being blown up, destroyed, and it served as a “wake-up call.” Alfred decided to tell the world that his understanding of life was more than obliterating things.

So he used his immense fortune to create a foundation to promote world peace. That is why he is known as the creator of the “Nobel Peace Prize” and not the “Dynamite King.”

Maybe this story is our “wake-up call.” Are we truly doing what we can to serve our Lord? Because when all is said and done, the only thing that lasts forever is our service to others. I think most of us help when we can but we must always be diligent in being a follower, not a watcher.
