Let the ’light’ of the world guide your path

Each Sunday at the 8:30 a.m. traditional service at La Vernia United Methodist Church, the service begins with an opening hymn and the pastors lead their way into the sanctuary following the acolytes who are holding a lit brass candle lighter. Upon reaching the communion table, the acolytes light the two altar candles.

As we view the lighted candle, we are reminded that Jesus is the light of the world, “When Jesus spoke again to the people, He said, ’I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12)

We can rejoice in the “light” and know that because of Christ’s great sacrifice, we will not walk in darkness, but rather, we can walk with our Savior.

As we sing songs and greet the others in the service, we can feast upon the love of Christ. “For God so loved the world?” (John 3:16) It is because of the vast love of God and His Son; that we can rejoice in His love. He spread His love to all and Christ died for all, all that are totally unworthy of that love, but because God spread His love, we can all walk with Him in our daily lives.

As the scriptures are read and the message is brought forth, we can learn that Christ wants to be our instructor and guide in our daily lives. We can claim His direction from the scriptures, “He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters,” are the words found in Psalm 23:2 and we can also find words of comfort and guidance in Psalm 143:10, “Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God, may Your great Spirit lead me on level ground.” Our goal should be to each day follow God’s guidance in every way.

We have a time in the service when we pray for the needs of those around us. We spend time in prayer asking for healing of the physically ill, healing of the spiritually ill, and praying for the community in the many needs. As we look at the candles, we know that our Christ is glowing and loving and spreading His guidance, and we can take our needs to Him because He cares!

And we can always take our problems and our desires to Him and ask Him for forgiveness when we put things before our worship. It is a time to reflect upon our witness and seek to always live in a way that brings glory to our Savior and Lord.

As the last hymn is being sung by the congregation, the acolytes step up to the altar and light their brass candle lighter from the altar candles and then before leaving the altar, they extinguish the altar candles.

We need to always remember to take the “light” of the world with us and make it a part of our daily life, not just the service on Sunday morning.

We need to reflect on Jesus being the light of the world, we need to thank Him for His love and we need to seek His direction in our lives.

When we look to the “light” we know that we can bring the needs of those around us to Him and He will be listening. Let’s always have the “light” near and dear to us. Let’s show that “light” in our daily lives and in our witness.
