Meet the Miss La Vernia candidates

Plan to attend La Vernia’s own royal event, as Miss La Vernia 2011 is crowned this Friday, May 13, in the La Vernia High School cafeteria. The pageant begins at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for anyone with a school I.D., and free for preschoolers and younger.

Miss La Vernia 2010 Krista Skelton will crown this year’s winner and the court will participate in the Bluebonnet Fest Parade on Saturday, May 20, to kick off the festival in the La Vernia City Park.

Here are this year’s candidates.

Miss Katelyn Tubbs

Katelyn Tubbs, 16, is a junior at La Vernia High School. She is the daughter of Barbara Rios and Melvin Tubbs, and is sponsored by Mary Jo Sturm.

At school, Katelyn is an A-B student, and participates in speech and debate, Model United Nations, and the dance team.

Her community service and interests include the Animal Humane Society in San Antonio. “I have three snakes as pets; I love to dance; I have literally traveled around the world more than once; I love working on cars; and I love spending time with my family and friends,” she said.

Miss Lauryn McCarthy

Tammy and Scott McCarthy are the parents of 16-year-old Lauryn McCarthy, who is a junior at La Vernia High School.

Lauryn is sponsored by the La Vernia Dry Cleaners.

She is a third-year member of the Honeybears Dance Team, and is a second-year lieutenant of the dance team.

Lauryn has volunteered to teach four summers in a row at Vacation Bible School at St. Joan of Arc Church, volunteered to teach at zoo camp for three summers at the San Antonio Zoo, and volunteered at the Fort Sam Houston horse stables. She has been a member of the ACTS team for two summers and volunteered in the haunted house at the Halloween festival at St. Joan of Arc Church.

Miss Sarah Wright

Sarah Wright, 16, is a sophomore at La Vernia High School. She is the daughter of Christa Lindsey and Ronnie Wright. Her sponsor is The Texas Real Estate Team.

Her school activities include being a member of Art Club, VASE contestant, Western Art contestant, and Western Art Top 50 winner. She has campaigned for the ethical treatment of animals and was the freshman Homecoming duchess.

Her community service and interests include being a proud member of the Dream Believe Know It Foundation; she is currently involved in the production of a nonprofit fashion show for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Western N.Y. Chapter, and has provided homes for abandoned animals. She has walked for Relay For Life, and is a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Stand True to help fight against abortion. She has been a participant in Teens in the Driver Seat and competed in numerous talent/modeling competitions and National American Miss.

Miss Taylor Penshorn

Taylor Penshorn, 16, is a sophomore at La Vernia High School; her parents are Rebecca and Darryl Penshorn.

Her sponsor is System Software Tools, Kevin and Shirley Stanush, owners.

Taylor’s school activities include being freshman and sophomore class president and secretary of La Vernia FFA Chapter. She is a member of the La Vernia Poultry Team and Senior Skills Team and exhibited at the La Vernia, San Antonio, and Houston livestock shows. A member of FCA, she has played junior varsity and varsity volleyball and varsity basketball, and participated in varsity track and was a 2010 track regional qualifier.

Her community service and interests include being a group leader of Immanuel Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School and volunteer for the La Vernia Parks Foundation and La Vernia Christmas tree lighting, Immanuel Lutheran Church Community Festival, Sophie Sparks benefit, and San Antonio Livestock Show school tours.

Miss Christina Brown

La Vernia High School junior Christina Brown, 17, is the daughter of Danielle and Tech. Sgt. Corey D. Brown. She is sponsored by her grandfather, Thomas Ochoa.

Her school activities include National Honor Society, cross country, and athletics.

In the community, she worked a blood drive at the high school, and gave blood for Sophie Sparks and Mr. Otzer. Christina has taught younger Sunday school classes before and after she moved to La Vernia in June 2010.

“I picked up trash with the youth to clean up the community before I left for La Vernia,” she said. During her senior year, she plans to take rigorous courses to get ahead in college, where she will study to become a pediatrician.

“I would like to attend either the University of Texas at San Antonio or Abilene Christian University, as both schools have outstanding medical programs,” she said. “I want to become a pediatrician because of my interest in the medical field as well as my love for children.”

Miss Abigail “Abby” Linares

Abigail “Abby” Linares, 17, is a La Vernia High School junior, and is the daughter of Cindy and Arthur Linares. She is sponsored by Ryan L Trailers.

She is a member of the Honeybears Dance Team.

Community service and interests include walking and selling raffle tickets for Relay For Life; participating in Pull for Pompe; and membership in the youth group at Hope La Vernia Church.
