In Christ, we have true freedom

It is not very often that we think of the freedom we enjoy in the United States. Every day is another day that we take for granted, but fully enjoy the benefits of the freedom that many fought and died for. We think of freedom on special holidays and celebrate with food and fireworks and doing whatever we want to do, instead of kneeling and thanking God for the freedom we enjoy. True freedom is not a celebration of independence; it is knowing God’s truth that really sets us free.

John 8:31-36 says: “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, ’If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ They answered him, ’We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of any one. How can you say that we shall be set free?’ Jesus replied, ’I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’”

It does not matter if we were born in a free country or who we are descendants of. We can still be under spiritual bondage. Jesus tells us in John 8:31: “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” We may think that if we go to church, read the Bible, and pray that we are free, but we must obey and put God’s Word to work in our lives to be truly free from the impact of sin in our life. When we read God’s Word and let it penetrate our lives, God’s Word will purge our spirits and souls of all sin and fill us with joy, peace, and true freedom. If we are free on the inside, we are truly free.
