LA VERNIA -- After a wait that was too long for some and too short for others, the La Vernia High School Bear football teams and Lady Bear volleyball teams returned to action this week. Two-a-days began Monday, and the August heat isn’t slowing these area athletes.

The Lady Bears hit the ground running, getting just four days to figure things out before beginning competition with a scrimmage in Wimberley. All three Lady Bear teams will travel to Wimberley this Friday, Aug. 9, and then to San Antonio and McCollum on Saturday, Aug. 10 for a second scrimmage.

The Lady Bears will play their first official match of the season at home on Wednesday, Aug. 14, as La Vernia plays host to Southwest. The team’s first district match, however, will not be until Friday, Sept. 27.

The Bear football teams have a bit more time to prepare, but the first games always roll around faster than expected. By UIL regulation, the Bears will condition for four days with minimal contact. On Friday, the team will suit up in pads for the first time this season, and begin to elevate their practices.

La Vernia has a pair of scrimmages planned, including a trip to Smithville Friday, Aug. 16, and a home showing against Boerne on Friday, Aug. 23. The Bears’ first official game of the season will be against Medina Valley, with the varsity team playing at home Friday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
