La Vernia fire department rolls out Rehab 1
Community members can visit and view Rehab 1, an RV renovated for use as a rehabilitation vehicle by the La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department, during the La Vernia BBQ Cook-off this weekend in the La Vernia City Park. The vehicle includes resting facilities, a field examination room, communications equipment, and more.

The La Vernia Volunteer Fire Department (VFD) has acquired an RV for use as a rehabilitation -- “rehab” -- vehicle at fires and public events. The new vehicle will be referred to as Rehab 1.

According to the departments’ driver and operator, Michael Hanson, the National Fire Protection Association set standards requiring a rehabilitation process for firefighters during emergency operations and training exercises. This led to the department’s purchase and renovation of Rehab 1.

The vehicle has been stripped of its carpet, furniture, and counters. These have been replaced with storage containers for emergency equipment and an examination area.

In the case of a fire scene, personnel are taken to the rehab area at prescribed times and begin the process of deacclimation, medical monitoring, and reacclimation. They are then returned to service or retained for further evaluation or treatment.

Rehab 1 carries rehab staff personnel, along with fluids, nutritional supplies, resting accommodations, communications equipment, and a rolling field examination room.

The vehicle will be used during active structure fires, large brush fires, and public events.

The La Vernia VFD also will provide the vehicle in mutual aid to neighboring fire departments, such as New Berlin and Lone Oak, and other departments in the Wilson County area.

Rehab 1 was purchased from the South Texas RV Superstore in La Vernia. Owner Mark Saxon helped facilitate the purchase and conversion of the RV.

“We couldn’t have done it without their help,” Hanson said. “He has been great helping us get everything together.”

Hanson currently is working to obtain graphics and logos for the vehicle to get it finished and ready to present to the public.

Community members can see Rehab 1 at the La Vernia BBQ Cook-off Friday and Saturday, Aug. 9-10, in the La Vernia City Park.
