La Vernia 30
Taylor 16

TAYLOR After taking the lead to start the game, the Bears fell quickly into a hole last Friday night in Taylor. They managed to claw their way out, though, and La Vernia returned home with a 30-16 victory over the Ducks in their final non-district game of the season.

La Vernia got things going in Taylor last Friday night as Landon Richter scored the first points of the night with an 8-yard run from scrimmage. Christian Bruce then ran in for the 2-point conversion, and the Bears led 8-0 with 8:46 to play in the first.

The 8-point lead was nice, but it didn’t last very long, as Taylor found the end zone 22 seconds later on a 71-yard touchdown run from Isaac Franco. The Ducks added an extra point, and the score was quickly 8-7.

Some miscues on La Vernia’s next offensive possession led to some additional Taylor points, as the Ducks recorded a safety against the Bears. The score was then 9-8 in favor of Taylor, and the Ducks were set to receive the ball on the short field. Taylor immediately drove the ball down the field and scored on a 6-yard touchdown run. Another extra point made it 16-8 in favor of the Ducks.

Games don’t often see momentum swings that drastic, but after watching an 8-0 lead turn into a 16-8 deficit in about four minutes’ time, the Bears knew they had to right the ship in a hurry.

The Bears settled into the game and began to focus on their ground game. La Vernia pounded Taylor and eventually wore down the defense. The Bears scored on a Jevante Anderson 4-yard touchdown run with 9:40 still left to play in the first half, and then again on a 28-yard dash from Tristan Summy. Quarterback Colby Skelton connected with Justus Parker for a 2-point play, and the Bears led 22-16 at the break.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Bears added a bit of insurance late in the fourth quarter with a thrilling 39-yard touchdown run from Levi Andrews. Andrews then ran in the 2-point conversion, and the final score stood at 30-16 in favor of La Vernia.

The Bears spread the work around on offense, running the ball a total of 52 times for 302 total yards. Anderson led the way with 95 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, followed by Richter with 75 yards and a touchdown on 13 touches. Summy ran six times for 46 yards and a score, and Andrews got 42 yards and the touchdown on just two carries. Skelton ran seven times for 22 yards, Matthew Montgomery ran three times for 19, and Bruce had one carry for 3 yards.

Skelton completed five passes on the night for a total of 74 yards. Andrews caught two passes for 37 yards, Parker caught three balls for 24 yards, and Cody Cook pulled in one pass for 13.

The Bear defense held Taylor to just 236 total yards and 11 first downs on the night. The defense forced five Duck punts and intercepted one pass.

The win puts La Vernia at 5-1 on the season, and gives the team a big win moving into District 28-3A competition.

La Vernia will travel to Pleasanton this Friday, Oct. 11, to take on the undefeated Eagles. Pleasanton is coming off a 46-0 win over Crystal City, and the Eagles have averaged nearly 42 points per game. Quarterback Jacob Arevalo is averaging more than 100 yards of passing per game, and has thrown 13 touchdowns and no interceptions through six games. Arevalo is also a gifted runner, averaging more than 100 yards per game on the ground. He has 11 rushing touchdowns to go with this 13 passing touchdowns this season.

Grant Jackson and Luke Stewart are also big runners for the Eagles. The duo has combined for more than 800 yards of rushing offense and nine touchdowns. Josh Oliver, Josh Lopez, and Jason Mills are Pleasanton’s top receivers, combining for nearly 500 yards and nine touchdowns so far this season.
