Starting next school year, students and parents in the La Vernia Independent School District could be hearing this exciting proclamation: “G-O-O-A-A-L-L!!” after the district’s trustees voted Oct. 7 to incorporate soccer into sports programs at the La Vernia junior high and high school campuses.

Several members of the public spoke during the public forum, encouraging the trustees to approve the soccer program, which would take advantage of the district’s newly renovated field.

More than 60 parents and students attended the regular board meeting to support adding soccer to the district’s athletic program. All erupted in cheers as the trustees gave their approval.

Superintendent Tom Harvey said Athletic Director Bo Robinson recommended appealing to the University Interscholastic League to add La Vernia ISD as one of the 3A division schools to compete. Currently, only 97 3A school districts in Texas have soccer programs.

Board President Cody Miller thanked all those who attended to support this item. He said he looks forward to starting soccer in La Vernia ISD.

In other matters, trustees Janette Chall, Susan Reinhard, Kimi Kravitz, and Janice Gimbel approved adding three new positions to the custodial department; one will be a night foreman. Harvey said the new positions could cost up to $80,000, but should be covered in the current budget.

The trustees also approved:

¢Two $500 donations for health-care supplies from the Lion’s Club.

¢A request for quotation from Child Nutrition Services vendors, who can offer fresh area produce.
