LA VERNIA -- By the first day of 2014, the city is set to be the home of two urgent care clinics. Both the Connally Memorial Medical Center and San Antonio-based Fossil Creek Urgent Care have their sights set on the U.S. 87 corridor.
Connally’s “La Vernia Health Center” is set to open before Dec. 31, according to Brian Burnside, the chief executive officer of the Floresville hospital. Burnside, during an Oct. 10 special meeting of the Wilson Memorial Hospital District board of directors, said Connally is in negotiations related to the terms of a five-year lease -- with two optional five-year renewals -- of a former doctor’s office in a retail center on U.S. 87 near the Lifechek Pharmacy. The 4,700-square-foot suite comes completely finished with features, including eight exam rooms, an X-ray machine, and laboratory equipment. The monthly rent for the first five years is $5,891.
Current plans are for the clinic to be open evenings Monday through Friday, and one weekend day. Services will be available on a walk-in basis and will include on-site X-rays, suturing for minor lacerations, basic sprain and fracture care, pain management, immunizations, occupational medicine, and more.
Also, the second of a series of Eagle Ford Urgent Care clinics is set to open Jan. 1, 2014, according to Joel Kaye. He, and business partner Brian Johnson, owns Fossil Creek, which maintains a clinic of the same name in the city’s Stone Oak area. The company is negotiating to lease space in the H-E-B shopping center near the corner of U.S. 87 and F.M. 1346 in La Vernia.
This location, Kaye said, will be the second of several planned for counties within the Eagle Ford shale oil- and natural-gas play. The first such clinic is set to open Nov. 1 in Floresville, in Dr. Bhavesh Shah’s former podiatry clinic on U.S. 181 near Plum Street.
Kaye said Shah is renting the building to Fossil Creek, which will offer services similar to those being offered at Connally’s urgent-care clinic, except that Eagle Ford Urgent Care is set to be open seven days a week. It will be staffed with three physicians and three nurse practitioners, he said.
