Bears to host Poteet this Friday

LA VERNIA After a week off, the Bear football team is ready to get back on the field, and things could get ugly this Friday against Poteet.

La Vernia is having a great year, and currently stands at 6-1 on the season. The team’s lone loss came in the second game of the year against Class 4A Port Lavaca Calhoun, and the Bears had a big win at Pleasanton to start district play.

Poteet will bring a 1-7 record into Bear Stadium this Friday, and the Aggies are definitely struggling. After finishing the non-district schedule at 1-5, Poteet opened District 28-3A competition with a 44-0 loss at Somerset. The Aggies then played host to rival Pleasanton, but was again shutout, 41-0.

Given the Bears’ tenacious nature on defense, and the prowess of their ever-improving offense, a similar score may result this Friday.

Poteet is another run-heavy team, with senior Derrick Santos handling most of the workload. Santos has carried the ball 108 times for 477 yards this season, and has six touchdowns for the Aggies. Senior Jeremy Gonzales also sees a lot of touches for Poteet, though he has just 110 yards and one touchdown on the season. Against Pleasanton, the duo combined for 28 carries, but tallied only 41 yards.

Kickoff between the Bears and Aggies is set for 7:30 p.m. at Bear Stadium. La Vernia will conclude the regular season with a game against Sam Houston on Nov. 1, and will host Somerset Friday, Nov. 8.
