8th Annual Ride to Remember

SEE BELOW / City Park

The City of Poth will host the 8th Annual Ride to Remember Bicycle Ride and 5K Run/Walk in cooperation with the Alzheimer's Association and the Poth Economic Development Corp. The Four Rider Levels are: 12 mile; 22 mile; 44 mile; and 66 mile. Half the proceeds benefit the fight to find a cure for Alsheimer's disease and half to benefit Poth City Park improvements. The Bicycle Ride and 5K Run/Walk begin at Poth City Park on Hosek Street. CHECK-IN begins at 7 a.m., Ride Start Time at 8, and Run/Walk start time at 9. Register online or at Poth City Hall.

At the City of Seguin’s 2015 Earth Day celebration, the Guadalupe County chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas won the award as the exhibit most likely to save the planet. Special this year will be an exhibit about the endangered Monarch butterfly, and a sale of the milkweed plants that these beauties need to survive. Be there!

East Central FFA plans golf tournament

The East Central FFA Booster Club will hold its first-ever golf tournament on Saturday, April 30, at the Republic Golf Club at 4226 S.E. Military in San Antonio. Registration will begin at 6:30 a.m., with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Games will be played in a 4-man scramble format and will include greens fee, cart, lunch, awards, and door prizes. 70th Annual Sängerfest Massenchor rehearsals will be held in Floresville as part of the Deutsch-Texanischer Sängerfest. The Singing Festival, open to the public, begins at 1 p.m. Ordinarily the participating German groups from Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fredericksburg, and San Antonio, each will sing a solo piece, followed by three joint German traditional songs by the ladies' chorus, the men's chorus, and then the finale, a statewide chorus. The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) has officially opened registration for the appointment only, Agricultural Chemical Collection event. The event is open to landowners in Bexar, Wilson, Karnes, and Goliad counties. Interested landowners will have until Wednesday, April 27, to return their registration form to their local Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Agent. Slots will be available based upon the order of registration. Walk-ins will not be accepted the day of the event. Empty pesticides containers will also be accepted the day of the event. All containers must be tripled rinsed before the containers are brought to the collection site. Landowners are also asked to register through the AgriLife agents.

Watermelon Jubilee Golf Tournament

This year’s festival will commence with the annual Watermelon Jubilee Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 4th at Riverbend Golf Club in Floresville. Registration will begin at 12 noon; start time will be 1:30pm. Entry fees are $75 per player or $300 per team (or register early before June 1st for $280 per team!), and the entry fee includes green fee, cart rental & meal. Mulligans will be $5 per player. The “Family, Fun & Freedom Festival” will be held on Sunday July 3rd from 2:00pm -11:00pm on the grounds of the Lauro G. Deleon III Floresville Event Center. Kids 12 and under are free, Pre Sale Tickets are just $5 and if you want to buy your ticket at the event it will cost you $10. Parking is Free. The event will be indoors and outdoors with plenty of space inside for Arts & Crafts vendors and area businesses wanting to advertise. There will be a kid’s area, Kite Flying field, Watermelon Eating and Washer Contests, Car Show, Live Music featuring Country Western, Blues, Oldies and Tejano. There will be a nice variety of food and beverage booths to satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst. We are celebrating our country’s independence so we will have an area themed “The Honor Wall”; where you can post a photo of a friend or family member who has helped protect our country and ensure our Independence. An evening Flag Ceremony including the singing of our national anthem is also in the works. It would not truly be an Independence Day celebration without a Fireworks show. This one in particular will be accompanied by patriotic music that will surely give you goosebumps. This “Family, Fun & Freedom Festival” is for the entire community! It will be promoted county-wide and then some!! Gather the family, grab your lawn chair and come celebrate with us. Disasters can strike in Wilson County, Texas. Are you prepared? Do you know what to do to protect yourself, your family and neighbors if a disaster occurs? A free Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Course providing disaster preparedness for the general public will be held the weekend of 14-16 October 2016 at the La Vernia Fire Rescue Station # 1, 12190 US Hwy 87, La Vernia, Texas. The fire station is located just East of the center of the city of La Vernia on Hwy 87. The topics will include Individual and Community Disaster Preparedness, Fire & Hazardous Material Safety, Disaster Utility Control, Disaster Medical Procedures, Light Search & Rescue techniques, Disaster Psychology, CERT & Terrorism, Incident Command System, CERT Organization and Communications. The 20 hours of training will conclude with a simulated disaster exercise to evaluate skills learned during the course.
