Cacti in Your Garden (Yes, Yours!)

7.00 pm / St John Lutheran Cchurch, FM 465

Do you believe that cactus is only a plant of the desert? Do you believe that, in this area, it’s only good for temporary residence in a fancy dish as a housewarming gift, then the compost when it rots and dies? The Guadalupe County Chapter, Native Plant Society of Texas will take a virtual trip to Big Bend and to a ranch near Sonora with Claude Townsend to see cacti in their native habitat, then learn how to use these xerophytic plants to add beauty and novelty to our own non-desert landscapes, and save water. Claude Townsend grew up in the mountains of North Carolina, and followed his father and both grandfathers into the nursery business. Today he raises and propagates cactus and other xerophytic plants for his own landscape and for sale. He is former president of the San Antonio Cactus and Xerophyte Society, part owner of C&E Cactus and Things Nursery, specializing in cactus and other xerophytic plants, and a member of Bexar County Master Gardeners. There is a plant/seed exchange and greeting at 6:30 PM followed by the program at 7:00PM. Visitors are always welcome. For more information, directions to St John’s Lutheran Church, or membership applications see our website at: http://npsot.org/wp/guadalupe/

Healing with Horses Barn Bash Fundraiser

5:00 PM / 10014 FM 973 Manor, TX 78653

Healing with Horses Ranch, a 501(c)(3) non-profit PATH Intl. Certified equine therapy center, will host its Second Annual Barn Bash on October 15, 2016, 5 p.m. The Barn Bash will offer events such as live music, silent and live auctions, photos with the mini horse, Oreo, and more. This year, the ranch is raising funds to build a covered arena so that students can ride around the year and in all weather. Healing with Horses Ranch offers lessons to at-risk youth, veterans, and individuals with physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges. In partnership with specially trained therapy horses, therapeutic riding encourages healing and independence for people with disabilities. “Our goal this year is to raise enough to build a covered arena. It’s a big endeavor, but the benefits will be monumental -- too often, the weather impacts what we are able to do with the students,” said Patty D’Andrea, Executive Director. “A covered arena means we will have the protected space to have lessons safely and comfortably, and our kids will have consistent access to the incredible physical and emotional benefits of equine assisted therapies.” The barn, which opened in 2012, has worked with over 130 students and over 350 volunteers and community members throughout Austin and the greater region. In the past year, they have doubled the number of students they serve, trained and hired two new instructors, and are in the process of mentoring eight more instructors-in-training. They recently launched a Veterans program, developed to empower our service men and women who have served in any military branch during any wartime crisis. Our programs serve at-risk youth, veterans, and individuals in Travis, Williamson, and Bastrop Counties. It is a place where horses heal body, mind, and soul.
