Purple Run

8:30 a.m. / Wheatley Heights Sports Complex, 200 Noblewood Drive

The Purple Run -- a 5-kilometer walk/run -- will take place Oct. 25 in east San Antonio in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This family-friendly walk/run will raise funds for Family Violence Prevention Services, Inc. and the Kristine Meza Foundation in addition to honoring victims of domestic violence. The 3.1-mile run/walk is open to individuals, families, teams, and even dogs. Individual registration is $30 through Oct. 19, $35 through Oct. 24, and $40 on the day of the race. Children 9 and under may participate for free, but children older than 9, teams, and dogs have special rates. Participants may pick up their registration package and a “goodie bag” beginning at 7:30 a.m. the day of the event, which also will include a balloon release.

Superhero Run and games benefiting Davian Rivera. A 6yr old Stockdale Elementary student with a genetic disorder called Ectodermic Dysplasia. With this disorder his body does not sweat, he is unable to cool his body temperature, has a blood disorder (IGA & IGM), and has a lack of an immune system. We are raising money to help with the cost of a cooling vest and help with other medical costs. Devian has to receive immunoglobulin infusions every 4 weeks. This creates a large burden on the family finances.

Chihuahua Trail Art Show & Sale

The tenth annual Chihuahua Trail Art Show and Sale, hosted by the La Vernia Historical Association, will begin a special, extended anniversary exposition on Saturday, November 1, from 10am to 8pm at the La Vernia Heritage Museum, and will continue every weekend in November from Noon to 3pm, except Thanksgiving, and then open again on the first weekend in December from Noon to 3pm, and then wind up the season on the evening of Friday, December 12 when the show will be open from 5-7pm during the Chihuahua Street Wassail Walk. The popular art show features fine art for sale by local artists, including this year's lineup of 25 professional artists and 75 works of art. The art includes framed landscapes, still life, animals, abstracts and much more in oils, acrylics and watercolors. Admission is free. Show visitors may vote on their favorite for the People's Choice award. A professional judge will select winners for the show theme category, which is "The Art and Soul of La Vernia" and for the overall show in which artists may enter works of their own choice. The Guadalupe County Master Gardeners present their brown bag luncheon at the Seguin Public Library, 707 E. College, Seguin ,TX 78155 on Friday, November 7 from noon to 1:30 featuring Nancy Masterson, Master Gardener and member of the Guadalupe Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas. She will be recommending plants with outstanding blooms and berries for Seguin. This program about native plants will provide free handouts. According to Nancy Masterson, “The program is NICE: Natives Instead of Common Exotics. Learn how to save money, save water and save the natural legacy of our beautiful state. Fall is a great time to add new plants to the landscape and some native plants put on their best show in autumn.” Admissions is free and feel free to bring your lunch.

Country Christmas Craft Show

Beethoven Concert Band Casino Night

The Beethoven Concert Band presents its second annual Casino Night fund-raiser at the Beethoven Halle und Garten, 422 Pereida St., San Antonio. Proceeds benefit the band, a nonprofit that promotes and preserves the performance of German music. The band performs more than 14 concerts per year at the Garten and in the community. The meal menu is roast pork tenderloin, rosemary potatoes, red cabbage, and a drink. There will also be a silent auction. Tickets start at $15, which includes a meal, one free drink, and entertainment, but no gaming. Full admission, $40 per person, includes the meal and drink, entertainment, and $1,000 in game chips, along with entry in a prize drawing. Chihuahua Street Wassail Walk

Stroll along old, historic Chihuahua Street, visiting and shopping late at the merchants along the way who will offer hot wassail and refreshments from 5-7pm.
