NEW EXHIBIT AT MUSEUM OF WESTERN ART

10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Tuesday through Saturday / The Museum of Western Art: 1550 Bandera Highway

The Museum of Western Art is pleased to announce a new exhibition on local history. Looking Back: Historic Photographs of Kerr County will open on Saturday, July 2, and will be on view through August 27, 2016. The exhibit highlights the unique photographic collection of one of the area’s notable historians, Joe Herring, Jr. The Kerrville native is co-owner of Herring Printing Company in downtown Kerrville, and is a 1982 graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. Since 1994 Joe has written a weekly column for the Kerrville Daily Times on the history of Kerrville and Kerr County. He has been very active within the community, including service as the city’s Mayor from 1992-1994 and was honored with the Kerrville Daily Times’ Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year award in 2010. Joe says, “I’ve been active in local politics, have served on numerous boards and commissions, and have tried to be a positive part of the community that’s blessed my family so much.” The exhibition features over forty images of Kerrville that span decades. Many of the photographs are featured in Joe’s 2012 book, Kerrville Stories: Historic Photographs and Newspaper Columns. The book will be available for purchase at The Museum of Western Art. Bart Jones, Vice-President of the Museum’s Board of Directors, said, “We wanted to showcase the history of our local community. We knew Joe had a great collection and we appreciate his willingness to loan his objects to us for everyone to appreciate.”

Blood drive

8:30am-1:30pm / Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1009 Trail St., Floresville

the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville for a blood drive Sunday, July 10, from 8:30am to 1:30pm. All donors will need to have a photo ID. Anyone who is 16 years old and weighs at least 120 pounds (with parental consent form), or 17 years old and weighs at least 110 pounds and is in good general health may donate blood. Blood donations typically drop during the summer because high school and college students are out of school, and community blood drives decline because people are on vacation. There is not enough blood on the shelves to treat patients, according to the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.

JEFF GANT AS ARTIST OF THE MONTH

5:30 PM / The Museum of Western Art: 1550 Bandera Highway

The Museum of Western Art is pleased to showcase artist Jeff Gant as its Artist of the Month for July. A wine and cheese reception will be held on Thursday, July 21 at 5:30 p.m. Non-museum members are invited to attend with a suggested donation of $10; museum members, of course, can attend the event at no charge. Please call 896.2553 to R.S.V.P. “Capturing the contemporary working cowboy is my main focus because it’s what I know best and I feel like that way of life is slipping away,” Jeff said. As a high school physics and chemistry teacher, he wakes up early every morning to drink a cup or two of coffee and gets as much painting done as possible before heading off to school. While mostly self-taught, Jeff has participated in Cowboy Artists of America Martin Grelle’s And Bruce Green’s workshop in Clifton, Texas, where he has twice been awarded a scholarship to attend through the Joe Beeler Foundation. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a BS in aquatic biology. He and his wife Roben and their two children live on the family ranch outside of San Marcos, where they see inspirations for paintings daily. The award-winning Museum of Western Art is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. The Museum is a Blue Star Museum, which means that now through Labor Day, active military and their families can attend the Museum at no charge.
